Title: Chicago Temple No. 2 (First United Methodist Church of Chicago), framed: pulp painting on handmade hemp / cotton paper (2018), Item No. 272.02

Description: The paper is "painted" completely with pigmented cotton pulp on top of a base sheet made from abaca and cotton. The entire process, from forming the base sheet to painting my image, is done at the same time while all the fibers are wet. Here's the process details: The fiber used in the creation of this sheet is a combination of hemp and cotton. I beat the fibers in a Hollander beater to form a pulp. Once the pulp is formed into a sheet, I place a series of mylar stencils on top of the still wet sheet. I spray finely beaten flax pulp, pigmented various shades, onto the base sheet. After the sheet is pressed and dried, the result is this sheet of unique paper, where the image itself is part of the paper fiber. Even though I use the same stenciled images multiple times, each sheet I create is unique, based on variations of sheet formation and pulp painting. Completed in 1924, the 568-foot Chicago Temple is a neo-Gothic skyscraper designed by the firm Holabird & Roche. It remained Chicago's tallest building for six years. It is home to the First United Methodist Church of Chicago, whose Sky Chapel is the world's highest worship space at a height of 400 feet. This paper is pH neutral and archival. The museum glass provides UV protection. Although the pigmented color is more light-safe and permanent than using dyes, it is best to keep the artwork away from direct sunlight. This piece comes with a one-sheet description of the artwork and is signed by the artist. Created in Bridgeport (Chicago), January 2018. The simple black wood frame gives this artwork a sleek, modern look. The paper artwork is floated on top of a dark gray archival mat which highlights the paper's deckle edges. Non-glare and UV resistant museum quality glass highlights the fibrous texture of the handmade paper. Artwork Size: 36 x 24 inches (approximate); 91.4 x 61 cm. Frame Size: 41 x 29 inches; 104.1 x 73.7 cm. Package weight = 8 lb.; 3.6 kg.; shipping/handling includes packaging cost and insurance.
