Title: My Hooves are Black My Red Tongue Swells, framed: Krampus Pulp Painting on Handmade Abaca and Recycled Paper with string and gold foil inclusions (2014), Item No. 161.02

Description: This handmade paper artwork is "painted" completely with pigmented cotton pulp on top of a base sheet made from abaca and recycled paper. The entire process, from forming the base sheet to painting my image, is done at the same time while all the fibers are wet. This sheet is made from a combination of abaca (inner bark of a banana plant) and recyled cotton paper. I swirl pieces of string and gold foil inclusions into the pulp. Once the pulp is formed into a sheet, I place a series of mylar stencils on top of the still wet sheet. I spray finely beaten cotton pulp, pigmented various shades, onto my base sheet. After the sheet is pressed and dried, the result is this sheet of unique paper, where the image itself is part of the paper fiber. Even though I use the same stenciled images multiple times, each sheet I create is unique, based on variations of sheet formation and pulp painting. This artwork is from my series of four pulp paintings inspired by Krampus, a beast-like creature from Central and Eastern European folklore. Unlike Saint Nicholas who rewards well-behaved children, Krampus punishes naughty children by chasing and beating them, carrying them away to his lair. Traditionally, men will dress as Krampus on the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, December 5, frightening young children with chains and bells. The title of the work comes from my poem: I roam the streets with chains and bells / My hooves are black, my red tongue swells / I find bad kids to swat and beat / I carry them to my lair to eat. Although the pigmented color in this artwork is more light-safe and permanent than using dyes, it is best to keep the artwork away from direct sunlight.
