Title: Moths of the Midwest, framed and matted – 19 color Letterpress on Cream Cordtone Paper (2014), item 136.70

Description: This print depicts five moth varieties in various stages on their life cycle, from caterpillar, to chrysalis, to adult moth. The types of moths depicted are Luna moth, Tobacco Hornworm, Cecropia, Bluish Spring moth, and Polyphemus. Letterpress printing is a form of relief printing which uses a printing press. I start by creating a watercolor painting of five moths. I scan and digitally separate the painting into a series of overlapping colors. I create raised polymer plates from the digital files. These plates are locked onto the bed of a Vandercook printing press, inked, and transferred onto paper through the application of pressure. I printed this artwork on a Vandercook model 4 at Spudnik Press in Chicago. The artwork is printed in 19 colors (hand-fed through the press 19 times, one for each color of ink) on textured paper (French’s Cream Cordtone). The image is an original design by Don Widmer. This print is number 70 in an edition of 75 and is signed by the artist. A descriptive sheet is included on the back, which describes the printing technique and design. The brown frame has a wood grain texture. The artwork is floated on top of a dark green mat. UV resistant conservation glass will protect the artwork from the effects of sunlight. Created in Chicago, Illinois. Artwork Size: 18 x 12 inches; 45.7 x 30.5 cm. Frame Size: 24 x 18 inches; 61 x 45.7 cm. Package weight = 6 lbs. 2 oz.; 2778 g.; shipping included
