Title: Death Springs Eternal: Skull Artwork (Santa Croce, Florence), matted and framed – 2 color Letterpress Print in Green and Black (2015), item 261.03

Description: While wandering the Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) in Florence, I discovered many skulls carved into the floor of the church. These were grave markers for notable Italians, such as Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. I decided to create a series of prints based on these dramatic and macabre skull designs. Letterpress printing is a form of relief printing which uses a printing press. I start by creating a raised polymer plates from my digital photograph. I create another polymer plate from a separate image to combine with the skull, in this case a leafy vine pattern. These plates are locked onto the bed of a Vandercook printing press, inked, and transferred onto paper through the application of pressure. I printed this artwork on a Vandercook model 4 at Spudnik Press in Chicago. The artwork is printed in black and green on light green cardstock (French’s Construction Factory Green paper). This piece comes with a one-sheet description of the artwork, including the printing technique and inspiration. The ornate, wood frame is colored a dark reddish-brown. The artwork is matted behind a black linen archival mat. Non-glare and UV resistant museum quality glass highlights the depth of the relief print process. Created in Chicago, Illinois. Artwork Size: 5.5 x 3.5 inches; 14 x 8.9 cm. Frame Size: 15 x 13 inches; 38 x 33 cm. Package weight = 3.5 lb.; 1.6 kg. ; ships insured in a cardboard box.
