Title: Tashmoo No. 3 (Great Lakes Ship / Sidewheeler Steamboat): Handmade Paper with Pulp Painting (2020), Item no. 302.03

Description: This handmade paper artwork is "painted" completely with pigmented flax pulp on top of a base sheet made from denim, linen and hasta. The entire process, from forming the base sheet to painting my image, is done at the same time while all the fibers are wet. The S.S. Tashmoo was a sidewheeler steamboat launched on December 31, 1899 by Detroit's White Star Steamship Company. Here's the process details: The fiber used in the creation of this sheet is a combination of denim and linen (recycled from clothing and fabric) and hasta (which I cook down from the raw plant material). These fibers are beaten and combined to form a pulp. I swirl metallic foil into the pulp to add texture and interest. Once the pulp is formed into a sheet, I place a series of mylar stencils on top of the still wet sheet. I spray finely beaten flax pulp, pigmented various shades, onto the base sheet. After the sheet is pressed and dried, the result is this sheet of unique paper, where the image itself is part of the paper fiber. Even though I use the same stenciled images multiple times, each sheet I create is unique, based on variations of sheet formation and pulp painting. Although the pigmented fibers used in this sheet are more light-safe and permanent than using dyes, it is best to keep the artwork away from direct sunlight. If you decide to frame this piece, consider floating the sheet on top of the mat, exposing the unique deckle edge. This piece comes with a one-sheet description of the artwork. The artwork itself is signed by the artist. Created in Bridgeport (Chicago), April 2020. Size: 24 x 36 inches (approximate); 61 x 91.4 cm.
