Title: Street Trash (2012): a Limited Edition Sculptural Artist Book with Original Text by Don Widmer

Description: This text was written as part of the multimedia installation Street Trash at Columbia College Chicago, April 20-May 17, 2012. The story is a modern retelling of the Wild Man myth, where boys on the verge of manhood are lured away from their families and into the “wilderness” by an old man who lives below ground. Through a process of initiation involving wounding and a descent into darkness, the boys face their childhood traumas and learn how to view themselves as beings with a larger cultural past and meaning. They learn how they fit into the mythology of their culture. In addition to the prose narrative of Street Trash, text was utilized within the original installation in various ways: spoken narration played through speakers or headphones, for example, or visual text appearing on objects. In addition, several short film scripts were written, although these were not utilized within the original installation. The text was meant to be experienced in random fragments. The complete text is presented here in an order which makes narrative sense to the author. The reader will find the text presented in its original form, whether prose, poetry, or the scripted form used by actors. This book utilizes a flat back case binding. Text was printed on a color laserjet printer. The font is Nyala. The paper is “Construction” grout gray, manufactured by the French Paper Co. The endsheets were handmade by the author from pigmented abaca with pulp painting. This is an edition of 10. The accompanying CD includes five audio selections used in the original multimedia installation. These were heard when audience members put on the wearable book objects associated with one of the characters. Featured in Four Artist Books video: https://youtu.be/Y9Pep1MDHPw
