Title: St. Peter's and Ponte Sant'Angelo18 x 14

Description: This painting depicts St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome as seen beyond the Ponte Sant’Angelo (on Ponte Umberto). St. Peter’s sits at the end of Via della Conciliazione, the boulevard that leads spectacularly into St. Peter’s Square. From St. Peter’s, extending off-canvas to the right is Vatican City and to the left is the Travestere section of Rome. In the foreground, spanning the Tiber River, is Ponte Sant’Angelo (Angel Bridge). The bridge was originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian to link the center of Rome to his mausoleum (off-canvas to the right), which today is the Castel Sant’Angelo. The angels lining the bridge were designed by Bernini in the 17th century. Bernini completed two of the statues with the others completed by other sculptors following Bernini’s design in later years.
