Title: Moths of the Midwest, framed and matted – 19 color Letterpress on Cream Cordtone Paper – with Cecropia, Polyphemus, Bluish Spring, Tobacco Hornworm, and Luna moths

Description: Letterpress printing is a form of relief printing which uses a printing press. This artisanal form of printing uses the same techniques developed by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century. Each color is applied separately using movable wood and metal type, photo-etched zinc “cuts”, polymer plates, wood cuts or linoleum blocks. For Moths of the Midwest, I start by creating a watercolor painting of five moths. I scan and digitally separate the painting into a series of overlapping colors. I create polymer plates from my digital files. These plates are locked onto the bed of a Vandercook press, inked, and transferred onto paper through the application of pressure. In this case I used 19 different colors! The poster was hand-fed through the press 19 times, once for each color of ink. This poster was individually letterpress printed on a Vandercook press at Spudnik Press in Chicago using Cream Cordtone paper by the French Paper Co., a family-run paper mill in Niles, Michigan. The poster comes signed and numbered (edition of 75), with a one-page description of the process. This is number 5 in the edition. The poster comes framed and matted in a Victorian-style, ornate, black, wood frame. The Crescent mat color is called Photo Gray and has a black core. The frame comes backed with kraft paper, strung with picture wire ready for hanging. Poster Size: 18 x 12 inches; 45.7 x 30.5 cm. Frame Size: 22.25 x 16.25 inches; 56.5 x 41.3 cm.
