Title: Hamatsa (2010) - A tunnel book by Don Widmer

Description: This artist book is the miniature version of my larger tunnel book of the same name. Inspired by Pacific Northwest storytelling, it utilizes a structure called a tunnel book, which dates back to the 19th century. The Hamatsa (cannibal) was a secret society among the Kwakiutl people of the Pacific Northwest coast. Part of its practice consisted of a dramatic performance with music, masks, and dancing. The text is original by the author, based on the declamatory nature and subject matter of existing song texts from the Pacific Northwest Coast Native cultures. I tried to capture some of the essence of sound and movement in this book through text, image, and structure. 5.25 x 10.625 x .25 inches (expands to 5 inches depth); handmade flax/abaca, cotton/sisal, and dyed mitsumata paper, ink, thread; tunnel book structure, laser cut, letterpress printed, hand sewn.
