Title: All About Lily No. 3, Framed – Pulp Painting on Handmade Daylily / Abaca Paper (2016), Item No. 226.03

Description: This handmade paper artwork is "painted" completely with pigmented cotton pulp on top of a base sheet made from abaca and daylily. The entire process, from forming the base sheet to painting my image, is done at the same time while all the fibers are wet. Here's the process details: I gather the leaves and stems of daylily in the fall, cooking the plant material with soda ash in order to break down the cellulose and achieve a pulp which is pH neutral. I hand beat the softened fibers with a wooden mallet (it takes a long time!). The daylily pulp is combined with abaca (inner bark of a banana plant) to give the sheet additional strength. Once the pulp is formed into a sheet, I begin to "paint" my image using a technique called pulp painting. I place a series of mylar stencils on top of the still wet sheet. I spray finely beaten cotton pulp, pigmented various shades, onto my base sheet. After the sheet is pressed and dried, the result is this sheet of unique paper, where the image itself is part of the paper fiber. Even though I use the same stenciled images multiple times, each sheet I create is unique, based on variations of sheet formation and pulp painting. The simple gold-colored frame complements the colors in the artwork. The artwork itself is floated on top of a green mat, exposing the paper's unique deckle edge. Non-glare and UV resistant museum quality glass highlights the depth and fibrous quality of the paper. Although the pigmented color in this artwork is more light-safe and permanent than using dyes, it is best to keep the artwork away from direct sunlight. This piece comes with a one-sheet description of the artwork. The artwork itself is signed by the artist. Created in Skokie, Illinois. Frame Size: 24 x 19 inches; 61 x 48 cm.
