Title: Transformation: Northwest Coast Hamatsa Dancer on Handmade Pigmented Cotton/Abaca Paper with Watermark, Framed (2009)

Description: In Transformation, the image of the crouching dancer appears as a watermark within the white cotton fibers. Look closely at the backlit paper to reveal evidence of the dancer’s cultural heritage as he transforms into the spirit realm. You will see a totem and masks, including the dancer’s own mask representing a cannibal bird spirit (or Hamatsa) with a long beak. Pieces of copper embedded in the paper signify the importance of this material to indigenous Northwest Coastal people. A watermark is an image created during the formation of paper as water passes through the screen. Traditionally watermarks were used as a type of signature for the papermaker. Today they can be more expressive and their own works of art. The artwork is professionally framed between 2 pieces of conservation glass (called a float frame), protecting the artwork from U/V light. The wooden frame has an antique copper finish, which complements the artwork's copper inclusions. This artwork could be hung in front of a window or other light source. The handmade paper will reveal the watermarks when lit from behind. This piece comes with a one-sheet description of the artwork. The artwork itself is signed by the artist.
