I make photographs with my medium format Bronica from the 1970's. I shoot transparency film and use an Imacon drum scanner to transfer high resolution digital images onto fine art paper using archival cannon inkjet printers. ... inspired my need to capture classic places before they vanish. Iconic scenes such as; drive-in movie theaters, barbershops, and old motels capture images of a simpler time. I find a solemn beauty in their loneliness and abandonment. As this culture is swallowed by the modern world, these images serve as a window into the past.
The photographs in Just Passing Thru are deceptive. At first glance the color is vibrant, and the subject matter is familiar and welcoming. When you look closer at the image, there is a quiet sadness and solitude to be found. I am drawn to these images because of their mystery. I am fascinated by the untold stories of these forgotten places.
I have not included portraits in this series. The work is about who might have been there, not who still remains. Just Passing Thru confronts the inevitable passing of time, and the losses we all suffer as humans. I believe that when all else is lost, photographs remain, leaving us nostalgic, bittersweet as it may be.
